Austria was one of the last countries in Europe to repeal the ban on homosexual marriages, which had been in effect since 1971. Until 2002, the ages of consent among homosexual vs. herosexual couples were unequal. Austria has no anti-discrimation provisions for gays and lesbians except those required by the European Union. There is no legal recognition of same sex partnerships, except the definition given of “the next of kin”.
